X-Men Destiny – Xbox 360 Review

X-Men Destiny is last of the work of the Canadian study Silicon Knights, one of which all have pinned their hopes. Oh yes, because if a time or Eternal Darkness Metal Gear Solid were the real gems, entered the history of video games, too Human, the disappointment was such that they should necessarily try to ride the waves of success with a game that could leave all open-mouthed.

X-Men Destiny seems to be a very ambitious game, which you cannot deny the intrinsic potential, take control of young mutants, guide them through the discovery of their superpowers, fighting alongside some of the best of the Marvel universe, and finally decide whether to side with the protectors of renegade mutants or their rivals. After the death of the captain of the X-Men, three young, unsuspecting mutants make their way to San Francisco, but what was to be a peaceful memorial in honor of the late Xavier turns into an event that, after the attack of an unknown, throws into chaos in the entire city.

And at this point that the player’s choice can be decisive, realistic action passes through the selection of one of the three characters, each with its own historical background: – Adrian Luca, son of leader of the “purists”, against the mutants until it turns out to be one of them – Grant Alexander, a rising star of football, joined the X-Men fleeing from Sandersville – Aimi Yoshida, Nippon girl at odds with their parents.

Once you have chosen our hero or heroine, before starting the adventure, we will have to give our character a power of 3 selectable, each with its own peculiarities: – Density Control, for those who “go heavy”, allows us to control the density of our bodies – Shadow Matter, for those who like a faster style of fighting, dark energy allows us to materialize for a few moments – Energy Protection for those who cannot do without the wizards, can emit energy beams from hands.

Selected the character and its superpower cannot go back, depending on the choice made will gain experience and will strengthen our power. Announced and then expected to be an action-RPG, all we expected so instead we have to find hands a true “bottom-smashing” with some element forcibly inserted, role-playing game. As you progress through the course of history, you will have the opportunity to interact with the famous Marvel characters in the saga, as the Iceman, Phenomenon, Gambit, Cannonball, Magneto, Wolverine, and the ubiquitous many more. Each of them will tell us something about what is happening around us through a system of multiple-choice dialogue. There is also a judging system that during the fight to the group, based on our choices and decide which side to help, will keep you on the good side, helping Cyclops, or bad, increasing their army.

All this seems to be that words really fascinating, is reduced to banal dialogue choices that will change in the plot substantially. All missions are reduced in most cases to kill waves of purists, alone or with the help of an NPC, depending on the faction chosen, resulting in the long run predictable and boring.

One thing, however, potentially interesting is that defeating your enemies you can get X genes through which you can edit the various Core Power selected when creating your character. X-Men Destiny offers the possibility to create customizations based on the various powers of Marvel’s most famous, divided into offensive, defensive and support.

In addition, the contribution that the X-Genes provide in the fighting is crucial: in combination with physical attacks the player can have fun with combos repeated or decide to mix more powers to strengthen the offense. The fights take place, of course, according to the “rules” of the adventure game: deadly rays, kicks and punches, clean sweep to distract from the game. However, we think the “challenge arena”, in my opinion, is the only positive element of the game. These extra challenges within the levels to complete in a given time. The challenges will provide a reward in experience points that will level up, and strengthen our character and our powers. Hidden everywhere, then you will find collectibles that once collected can unlock the biography of all the superheroes in the game.

Although the story is undoubtedly interesting, considering that we have “got their hands” Mike Carey, the famous writer of Marvel, we can conclude that the game has not been a great success.
